Hockey Day in Canada 2013- It’s a wrap!

Thanks to All for taking the ZONE Floorball Challenge this Saturday at the Richmond Olympic Oval during Hockey Day in Canada!

We had players from over 26 Hockey Associations/Groups and 7 school districts pop by our shooting station.  We tested shot Speed with our radar gun and tested sharpshooters for accuracy.  We encourage all the participants to reach out to BC Floorball so we can make Floorball a regular program in your area.

The Celebrity Floorball Game (they called it Ball Hockey) was a big hit with both the players and the fans.  It was a thrill to see Hockey greats Guy Lafleur and Pat Quinn playing Floorball and really enjoying the sticks that were provided by game sponsors Gracious Living, Zone Floorball and BC Floorball.

We could go off on a rant about how they keep calling our event Ball Hockey instead of Floorball but we won’t.  We’ll just keep growing the great sport of Floorball and eventually everyone will tune in.  The Mayor of Richmond, Mr. Malcolm Brodie kept alluding to the great variations of Hockey under one roof, ice hockey, ball hockey, floor hockey…but no mention of Floorball.  That’s ok.

The main message of the day was how wonderful Hockey is in building character through the best team sport in the world, and at BC Floorball we love that message that team sports like Hockey and Floorball build outstanding human character.

Team 1040, who were live at the event, and their broadcast crew also were quick to talk frequently about the Celebrities and Ball Hockey etc. etc.  but those of us in the know, knew better.

We had a few scouts search inside and outside the Oval for Ball Hockey on Saturday…but there was none.  Yes, there was a pretty active adult Floor Hockey event, being hosted by our friends at Urban Rec, but the only other gym Hockey there was us- the BC Floorball Crew.

The Richmond Oval offers two types of Hockey programming- Floorball and Hockey.

The thing about Floorball is it requires a discussion, and it takes some educating on our part to position it properly in it’s place as a Hockey variant.  We can assure you that a simple Google search for “Floorball” will bring a world of insight and knowledge about the International game of Floorball,  and it’s approval by the IOC execs to make the International Floorball Federation (IFF) a recognized sport federation in the Olympic family.

We had a great day, thanks to the Richmond Oval and the City of Richmond, already looking forward to next year as we continue to build the sport of Floorball in BC.
