    ECT07 Final Roundup

    Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

Apologies for the delay, here’s another report from the recent East Coast Tournament in Raleigh, North Carolina.

In the second day of competition Montreal United had another 3 games slated.

Philedelphia gave a solid effort but Montreal used their speed up front and goal scoring power to over take them 9-2.  This put them up against the tournament favorites NY and easily one of, if not, the most talented teams in North America.  Made up of many former players from Sweden, NY is a power house with snipers that can pick a corner from literaly anywhere.  Montreal came out strong and took a surprising 2-0 lead.  You could tell NY was not pleased and fought back hard.  Even though Montreal’s goaltender, Christian Raschle, had many outstanding saves and probably the best goaltending of the tournament, NY answered with 4 goals to put them in the finals and their eventual gold medal winners.

For the bronze medal match, this put Montreal up against their Canadian rival Toronto yet again.  With a long history behind these two teams, each team came out not wanting to lose to either.  The game was hard fought and remained a 2-2 tie until the last five minutes or so when Montreal broke through Toronto’s strong defense and solid positioning to unleash a final 3 goals to take the Bronze 5-2.  This also made them the North American Champions, a combined total of performance at the Canada Cup and TFC, beating out NY only on a count back.

BC import, Blair Zimmerman, played his regular game of strong checking, helping out the defense along with some quick offensive breaks and the odd Zimmerama!  With two pretty one timers to the top right corner on a rush, he went home happy with a record of 3 goals and 3 assists.

When asked, Blair said his favorite play was stealing the ball from Toronto’s solid D man Fahad Siddiqui.  This was quickly followed up by him saying his least favourite play was Fahad stealing it right back from him!

For any BC players interested in attending the ECT for 2008 you will be guaranteed a weekend of tough, intense, competitive floorball against some the best teams and players in North America, all with that warm Southern hospitality, that is sure to leave you smiling for weeks.  Special thanks to the volunteers at TFC.

    TEAM CANADA REPORT

The Canadian Mens National Team suited up for a match against the tournament
Allstars that was made up of  players from Team USA and some of the top
visiting European talent. It was definitely the fastest, most intense match
of the ECT that kept the fans entertained. The game also had a more physical aspect to it than normal as the referees let them check shoulder to shoulder, which is becoming more and more accepted at the top international level.

An impressive exhibition in front of their home crowd was led by the younger USA talent. They had an excellent match, showing speed, ball handling skill and that they can play with the intensity that is required to win at that level. Canada’s tenacity put them out front 3 nothing until only the last few minutes when the Allstars took away netminder Derek Swanton’s shutout. Final Score Canada 3- ECT All-Stars 1

None of the Canadian team members residing in Europe, who typically make up half of the Mens National Team, were available, which left spots for some new first time Canadian born and bred talent to take to the court.  Newcomer Stephane Laporte from Montreal definitely caught the
attention of many in the stands showing speed, determination and his slick
stick handling skills, often going through 2 or 3 players without being
touched on a charge to the net.  Stephane has recently switched from ball hockey to
floorball and his opposing teams already have his number marked.  This is a great example of the talent that will lead the charge of floorball at the grass roots level in Canada!

    Congratulations Stephane!  Keep it going.

Local BC Floorball star, Blair Zimmerman, had a solid game, using his speed up and down the court, breaking up plays and defending off the other team.  Well done Blair and congratulations to The Men’s National Team on another victory!

Zimmerman helps Montreal and Team Canada to Victories

    Saturday, September 1st, 2007

    Ect07_logo_2

Raleigh, N.C.- Blair Zimmerman, on loan from the Vancouver WaveRiders Floorball Club, helped Montreal to victories against Boston and Toronto, today.  A close game against Raleigh resulted in a 3-2 loss. To cap off Day 1 of the East Coast Tournament in Raleigh, North Carolina, Zimmerman suited up for the Canadian National Floorball Team as they took down the American squad 3-1.

We are sure the Zimmerama’ was in full effect throughout the day and we will keep you posted on the final days results.

Congratulations to the Canadian players on their victory, that’s three in a row…
